It's funny how examples from 15 years ago are still relevant today for making a point.
15 years ago, I went to New York for a summer job at a mall kiosk. The first 2 days were a nightmare because I was finding it hard to sell to Americans. They were always in a hurry and constantly annoyed by different kinds of salesmen, so they didn’t have the patience to listen. There is nothing more frustrating than chasing after potential customers.
During one of my breaks, I noticed that the people who shopped in the mall were about 50% locals and 50% foreigners, but no one tried to sell to the foreigners. They were almost like “Invisible People”. I decided to spend my time learning how to approach them. I started to ask workers in the mall who spoke their language, how to say a few Spanish words. Soon I composed a sales speech in Spanish. When I started to sell in Spanish, the foreigners were so impressed that someone spoke their language, that they called their friends over to listen. So, instead of making a 1:1 sales pitch, I was pitching to 4 or 5 people at a time. The enthusiasm was stunning and the sales were amazing! Every pitch led to several people's sales. By identifying a differentiator positioning, I managed to "game-change" my business sales!
The effect of context perception
Environmental features such as time, location, and lighting can change the way objects are perceived by us. You may not notice a man in a tailored suit in a huge office building. But if the same person was dressed in the same outfit he wears to the beach, it would immediately catch your attention.
Founders of a brilliant product idea for indoor air purification were sure that their target market was the home (indoors) air purifier market. They spent 3 years developing a product characterization in the context of the air purifier market needs and didn’t notice a larger and much more interesting new market for IoT (internet of things) was developing...
As soon as the entrepreneurs realized that there was an interesting trend in smart home consumption behavior, they looked at the product more broadly – what else can the product do?
The product can also provide smart home safety through air purification.
Same product – air purifier
Different product propositions can also provide smart home safety.
Changing their perception of the market/market context, helped them raise an initial sum of $1,200,000!
